F

FEC
Forward Error Correction, a method of error prevention used in conjunction with digital transmissions.

Feed horn
Unit sound at the focal point of the parabolic dish. It collects the greatest possible intensity of signals reflected by the parabolic dish. This must be achieved without including signals from sources surrounding the dish. In addition, interference from surfaces and objects situated behind the dish must be excluded.

FM
Frequency Modulation, a method by which the basic band signal modulates the frequency of the carrier wave.

Focal point of parabolic antenna
The point at which the rays/waves received by the parabolic antenna/satellite dish are reflected, and are most strongly bundled.

Footprint
The receiving area of a satellite on the Earth's surface. This refers to that geographical area in which the signal strength (output flow density) of the satellite transponder is sufficient for the signal to be received by a dish antenna of a specified size. The further the reception location is situated from the centre point of the footprint, the larger the antenna diameter required.

Frequency
Unit of measure for the number of completed oscillations in one second, expressed in terms of oscillations per second, or Hertz (Abbr Hz). Thus a frequency of 950 MHz equates to 950 million oscillations in one second.
